Description of CNC Turned Machining:

CNC turned machining is a highly precise and efficient manufacturing process used to create cylindrical or radially symmetric parts by removing material from a rotating workpiece. This process is performed on a CNC lathe, where cutting tools are programmed to move in specific paths to achieve the desired shape, dimensions, and surface finish.

 

Key Steps in CNC Turned Machining:

1. Workpiece Setup

A cylindrical workpiece (e.g., metal, plastic, or composite) is securely clamped in the lathe's chuck or collet.

The workpiece rotates at high speeds while the cutting tool remains stationary or moves linearly.

2. Tool Selection

Appropriate cutting tools (e.g., inserts, drills, or boring bars) are selected based on the material and design requirements.

3. Programming

A CNC program is created using CAD/CAM software, specifying the tool paths, cutting speeds, feed rates, and depth of cuts. The program is uploaded to the CNC lathe's control system.

4. Machining

The cutting tool removes material from the rotating workpiece to create the desired shape, such as grooves, threads, or contours. Multiple tools may be used in sequence to achieve complex geometries.

5. Finishing

Secondary operations, such as polishing, deburring, or coating, may be applied to improve surface finish and functionality.

6. Quality Inspection

The finished part is inspected for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and overall quality using tools like calipers, micrometers, or CMMs.
